Ur Jocelyn Baines' JOSEPH CONRAD (Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1960): Despite bad health Conrad worked hard at VICTORY (på svenska SEGER) för the first half of 1914 and had finished it by the end of June. VICTORY has the same intensely romantic tone as CHANCE, "Freya of the Seven Isles", and "the Planter of Malata"; moreover it presents, basically, a similar theme to that of CHANCE in similar terms: emotional isolation and the difficulty of contact between human beings are embodied in the damsel in distress and the chivalrous but excessively reticent knight. But there is no repetition, because Heyst's disillusioned and cynical father had imposed on him a superficial indifference towards life.
