The story of Paul and Virginie by Jacques Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was published for the first time in 1788 and was an immidiate success. The following 100 years it went through an unmanageable number of editions, adaptions and translations. The story is set on Mauritius and treat the burning issues of education, social classes and slavery on the eve of the French revolution. This is an early Swedish translation of Favières opera libretto adaption, originally published in 1791 and set in music by Rodolphe Kreutzer.
