Just as WW2 was starting, someone thought that producing a fast, light tank with a heavy punch would be a good idea. To keep the weight down, the armor was very thin, and there was no top for the turret. Doctrine said that these weapons were not to be used as tanks, but tell that to the Infantry. The tank destroyer units were spread out amongst the grunts, who used them as tanks. In some cases, such as the M-36 with a 90mm cannon, these weapons were the only things around that could knock out a German Panther or Tiger tank.
I think this is a very good, concise work on the different versions of the US tank destroyers. This book follows the usual Squadron Signal format of 48 pages, clear B&W photos, plenty of line drawings, helpful captions and 2 pages of color plates. The book gives brief but accurate history of US Anti-Tank vehicles from 1941-45. Vehicles such as the 75mm version of the US Half track, M-18 Hellcat, M-10 (based on Sherman chassis, did not have a nickname) and the M-36 Jackson. The British version Achilles is covered here as well.
This book is perfect for modelers, or those who are interested in learning more about US armored warfare in WW2. R.P. Hunnicutt's book on the Sherman will set you back close to $100.00 - this book is very good alternative, a good bargain.
