The Best of Dixieland Favorites & how to play them

Noter, notblad. 128 sidor.

Mycket gott skick. ///Förlagets beskrivning: "DIXIELAND" is a term applied to the pure New Orleans jazz style and its modified derivatives played before the swing era. Dixieland originated in the early 1900's, when the white musicians of the South began to imitate the music style of the Negro Jazz musicians of the period. Because of their disslmiliar musical and hereditary backgrounds, their interpretation of the Negroes' music resulted in a totally different sound. The basic elements remained the same, but modifications and personal features were added ... such as substituting the written note for improvisations . . . an innovation which made their music less flexible than jazz. It was a new way of playing music, not a new music I In November of 1917 the New Orleans "Story vi l le" district closed, and the musicians began a migration to the north . . . many finding work on Chicago's South Side where they enjoyed popularity and financial success. Under the New Orleans influence, these young men and their other, now famous contemporaries evolved a "sound" which combined the essential jazz feeling with technical, emotional and instrumental variations devised to broaden the New Orleans form. It was during this period that Dixieland and jazz were first confused. For instance, there was the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, a New Orleans group, who played an important part in popularizing this exciting style of music. .. but whose very name added to the confusion. It is of course, a fact that Dixieland has many characteristics which are found in jazz. However, jazz isa people's music ... dynamic, varied, flexible, experimental and changeable, while Oixieland is a style and a repertory based on this music. It is much slimmer in concept, less varied in content and almost inflexible in its performance. However, it has been the launching vehicle for the development of jazz. Historically speaking, Dixieland was the first step away from the pure New Orleans sound and style, as played by "King" Oliver, "Jelly Roll" Morton and the late, great Louis Armstrong, toward the big band music of this era. This compilation of Dixieland tunes includes many which were written and featured by the outstanding "Dixie-landers" of the 1920's. Judith Lynn Porter
