Tomorrow's Materials

Tomorrow's Materials

Häftad bok. Institute of Metals. 1988. 109 sidor.

Nära nyskick. At the basis of most of the technological advances of recent years, the explosion in new sophisticated materials is transforming everything in our manufactured environment — from the humble pair of scissors to jet aircraft and America's Cup yachts.
Examples of new materials dealt with in this book include aluminium-lithium alloys and fibre/polymer composites for aircraft frames and skins, rolled structural beams made of toughened concrete, new engineering polymers that may soon displace metals, advanced ceramics that promise to revolutionise the machine tool, electrical and automobile engine industries, fibre optical materials, networks of which will shortly span the world, new generations of transistors, and a 'warm' superconducting ceramic with applications in computing, medical scanners and levitating trams.
Aimed at a general readership including school leavers, students, and undergraduates of all scientific and engineering disciplines, as well as individuals requiring an update on advanced materials, the book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of materials science and continues with a wide range of current and potential applications for structural and lightweight materials, wear and heat resisting materials, optical materials, and electronic and magnetic materials. It contains a comprehensive glossary of words and terms used in materials science, thereby making its content accessible to non-specialists of the subject.
Professor K E Easterling, DSc, CEng, MIMechE, has an extensive background in industry and university, having studied and worked in Britain, Finland, Sweden and Australia.
Following a postdoctoral fellowship at Imperial College, London, he lectured at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg for some years before being appointed Professor of Materials Engineering at the University of Luleå in 1973. He has been a visiting Professor in America, Britain and Australia and has given invited lectures throughout the world.
