Astronomischer Bilder-Atlas

Grafik, karta.

Hyggligt skick. [Format: 31,5 x 24,5 cm. (folder size) / 29,5 x 23,5 cm. (plate size). Language: German.] Printed and published by Wilhelm Nitzschke, Schw. Hall. (without year of print, 1850 or around there). The actual plates are manufactured by Halder & Cronberger institute in Stuttgart. The work consist of 12 lithographed astronomy plates and an explanatory sheet attached to the back of the last plate, all contained in a linen cloth folder with blind imprinted decoration on the back and blind- and gilt imprinted decoration/text on the front, with cloth ties to keep the folder closed. I believe there should be a booklet accompanying the plates. If so, then it is missing in this copy. There's a couple of owner's names in pencil on the inside of the front board. One of them is Augusta von Düben, the other i cannot read. On some of the uploaded images, you can get an understanding of what the plates with colored, see-through paper looks like when illuminated from behind. It's done with a flash light, with results accordingly. It will look better when a proper light source is used. --- A description found online as follows: "The Astronomischer Bilder Atlas (Astronomical picture atlas) by Ludwig Preyssinger, professor of mathematics, chemistry, physics, cosmography and natural history at the Royal Lyceum Augsburg, is a set of 12 individual beautifully crafted and detailed coloured litographic engravings printed on a thick cardboard. Six of these plates (no. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7) are unique - they have numerous smaller or larger portions of the board cut out and pasted over a thin layer of translucent coloured paper pasted on the back side of the plate. When holding these plates against light, the cutout parts light up in various colours, creating stunning visual effects." There's a later reissue of this work in which a couple of the plates have minor alterations, and the last plate (XII - "Meteorological illustration, depicting the various phenomena of the atmosphere".) have been replaced with another, called "Mathematical geographical meaning of lighting". Note that my attempted translations of the captions of the 12th plate might not be 100% accurate. --- The folder has scuff marks and soiling on the back, and the same at the front, but with the addition of two rather large (about 3x3 and 4x4 cm.) areas where the cloth is missing, heavily worn areas I imagine. Edges are worn in a few places. The cloth ties are also worn, but still intact. The inside is covered with yellow paper wich is intact on the boards but very worn in the centre (inside of the folder spine) and there is also some remains of a paper flap which originally (probably) covered the plates. The important part, the actual plates, are in pretty good condition. There's light age toning and some edge wear, smudge marks or some dust soiling occasionally. Hardly any age spots at all. See pictures. If you are interested I have a few more pictures.
