The treaty with Tunisia was the second to be negotiated between Sweden and the Barbary states during the 18th century. A treaty with Algiers had been negotiated in 1729 and Tripolis followed in 1741. The main aim from the Swedish side was to establish a system of ship’s passports, so that Swedish merchants could trade freely in the Mediterranean and not be attacked by Barbary pirates. Apart from regulating this, the treaty deals with the free import of all kinds of goods needed for war at sea, the treatment of Swedish slaves in Tunis, the privileges of the Swedish consul, etc.
