A woman and her young son travel by car through the southern and midwestern United States in this heartbreakingly spare novel-in-dialogue, set in the mid-to-late 1950s. As the mother drives, she and the boy, Roy, trade impressions of the landscape and of life. In the process they approach an understanding of each other, and of their shared, inner landscape. A work of rare and intimate beauty, Wyoming is Gifford at his best.
BARRY GIFFORD'S novels have been translated into twenty-five languages. His book Night People was awarded the Premio Brancati in Italy. David Lynch's film Wild at Heart, which was based on Gifford's novel, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1990;
Gifford's novel Perdita Durango was made into a feature film by Spanish director Alex de la Iglesia in 1997.
Gifford cowrote with director David Lynch the film Lost Highway (1997), and cowrote with director Matt Dillon the film City of Ghosts (2003). His new story collection is called Do the Blind Dream? (Seven Stories Press, 2004).
