(GAGNERAUX, BÉNIGNE) (1756-1795) - SANDSTRÖM, BIRGITTA:
Bénigne Gagneraux 1756-1795. Éducation. Inspiration. Oeuvre.
Stockholm 1981. Diss. (Thése de doctorat.) 4to. 344 pp. + abstract leaf. Illustrated. Pictorial wrappers, slight wear to lower wrapper, abstract leaf somewhat worn with frayed edges.
¶ Very scarce. Abstract: "During his lifetime, the painter Bénigne Gagneraux attracted very much attention, foremost in Rome where he was primarily active. His first important patron was King Gustav III of Sweden, and it was through him that Gagneraux gained his introduction to an international clientele, mainly Swedish and French. Furthermore, he was the French painter most favoured by contemporary Roman patrons of the arts. In the main, this work is a monograph on Gagneraux. However, using a comparative method, it also evokes the artistic climate of the period and the position Gagneraux achieved. A study of his production and work leads to an understanding of the conditions dominating art life in Italy during the last decades of the eighteenth century - fashions in taste, preferences in questions of picture genre and patronage. An important part of this work is devoted to the training given in the representative arts during the second half of the eighteenth century. This is exemplified by the fact that Gagneraux who studied at Dijon, perhaps the most important of the French provincial academies, then continued his studies in Rome during eight years, which was in accordance with a long-standing tradition. Gagneraux' style is eclectic. This is revealed by a review of the subjects he chose to portray, by his sources and by his compositions. His most independent expression is found in his engravings where in collaboration with Wilhelm Tischbein, the German, and John Flaxman, the Englishman, he works out the principles of linear engraving."
