Stockholm. A. Bonniers Förlag. Tryckt hos L. J. Hjerta. 1844. 4.o. 25 x 17 cm.Title + 24 text leaves. + 24 pp. (biographical note) + 25 lithographic plates Black half calf. Blind pressed boards with title in gilt at the front board. Spine decorated in gilt. Rebacked. Bumped corners. Small nicks and creases to the end papers. Some foxing and browning here and there. A few very short tears to the margins. A couple of plates slightly smaller. An illustrated history of Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, Napoleon´s general who became king Carl XIV Johan of Sweden in 1818. The plates were lithographed by Carl Andreas Dahlström after his own originals as well as others. Dahlström is perceived to be one of the best lithographers of his time, educated by the great A. J. Salmson. He was very productive and published numerous caricature albums as well as plate books containing costumes, historical scenes and portraits. His first album published in 1843 (Svenska Caracterer), included four classic caricatures depicting comical situations in the streets of Stockholm. With that album he managed to propel himself into a prominent place as a witty commentator of current affairs in the tradition of Per Nordquist, Hjalmar Mörner and others. Interestingly, in the mid 1840s he was running a Diorama in Stockholm, a novelty invented by Daguerre. A forerunner to cinemas, displaying transparant paintings in various kinds of light.
