DAN DUȚESCU
was born on 21 October 1918 in Bucharest, Romania. He married in 1942 and has a daughter and three grand- children. He graduated in English and Romanian from the Faculty of Letters of Bucharest University. He was a lecturer of English and Old English Literature at the same University between 1961 and 1975, when he retired. For a number of years he offered English lessons by Radio and TV. In 1964-65 and 1971-73 he was lecturer of Romanian Language and Literature at London and Cambridge Universities. He has travelled to many countries of Europe and to the USA to par- ticipate in literary conferences and to lecture on Romanian literature and culture.
He is above all a translator of poetry. He translated from Beowulf in alliterative verse, also from Robert Burns and other English and American poets, but his outstanding work is his Romanian version of Geoffrey Chaucer's complete Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde, as well as a number of Shakespeare's plays. He prefaces most of his own volumes of translations. For a great number of years he has also translated Romanian poetry into English. His translations have been published both in Romania and abroad.
He was awarded the Prize of the Writers' Union of Romania in 1976 for his English version of the Ro- manian popular ballad Meşterul Manole and in 1978 for his translation of Chaucer. În 1981 he was reelected member of the Council of the Writers' Union.
