"This is the first complete introduction to the current generative theoretical phonology, presenting a general introduction to the two theories of phonological representation that lie at the center of current research. In addition, the central issues and tenets of lexical phonology are set out and critically evaluated. The first chapter introduces the notions of autosegmental phonology through a detailed study of tonal phenomena from African and Mexican languages. The second chapter develops the more general notion of the skeletal tier, through both its morphological and its phonological uses in languages and language families as varied as Arabic, Bantu and Penutian. The third chapter presents a new synthesis of work on the syllable, reaching back to the extensive tradition of work on the syllable in the 1940s and 1950s, and integrating this with ongoing work today. The fourth and fifth chapters present a current picture of metrical phonology and lexical phonology, while the final chapter brings together additional theoretical topics, including the Obligatory Contour Principle, feature hierarchies, and the nature of automatic spreading. The book concludes with a brief sketch of a model of harmodic phonology, which resolves a number of inadequacies in current phonological theory".
