In March of 1998 Hugh Thompson and Larry Colburn traveled to Vietnam and were reunited with two of the women whose lives they saved 30 years earlier, during the My Lai massacre. The women thanked them over and over again. Then one of them, Pham Thi Nhanh, brought up an aspect of the rescue that had haunted Thompson all these years: "If you had been there earlier, you would have rescued more people, not only the ones in my shelter." Thompson swallowed hard then responded: "Believe me, I've thought about that often, and I wish we could have done more." As it turns out, Thompson and his crew did more good than they realized. Their intervention in
the massacre, coupled with Thompson's reporting it to his superiors, brought about the cease-fire that put a stop to the killing. And though it was too late for the people of My Lai, their neighbors in several of the surrounding villages and hamlets - who were also in line for execution - were spared a visit from Charlie Company.
