Två av rockens stora namn från sent 60-tal får varsin LP-sida: The Who & The Jimi Hendrix Experience."The fourth in Track Records' supremely budget-priced series of collection building compilations, Backtrack 4 follows in the footsteps of its immediate predecessor and concentrates on the label's biggest hitters, Jimi Hendrix and the Who. Each receives one full side of the album, wrapping up a clutch of headline-hogging hits, then making up the weight with key album cuts.From Hendrix, the hits catalog is served by "All Along the Watchtower" and "Burning of the Midnight Lamp"; the remainder of his offerings are drawn from the stereo Are You Experienced? and Axis: Bold as Love albums. Flipping the disc, "Pictures of Lily," "I Can See For Miles," and the late-in-the-day psychedelia of "Call Me Lightning" are each reminders of just how sensational the Who were at this peak -- and, if you're not yet convinced, four cuts from the Who Sell Out apex will surely chase away your doubts. It's also worth remembering that, in 1970, stereo sound was still only a couple of years old in Britain, and the nation's consumers had yet to get round to replacing their old mono records with the new-fangled format. Backtrack 4 certainly made the case for Sell Out to be one of their first purchases -- the guitar solo ripping through the stereo "Our Love Was" was worth the price of admission alone. The stereo "Pictures of Lily" was also a whole new experience, although tradition wins out on the other two 45s, both presented here in their familiar mono form."
