This spectacular book brings together work made by Andy Goldsworthy in Britain, France, the United States, Australia and Japan between 1990 and 1993.
• It includes works that involve not only stone of various kinds - slate, limestone, sandstone, river boulders - but also leaves, flowers, sand, clay and scrap steel.
• A riverside slab of rock in St Louis, Missouri, glows with the colours of autumn leaves, becomes part of a wall, acquires an overall covering of green leaves, and is cradled in a nest of branches. In a forest in the Lake District, a wall snakes its way through the trees. Sandstone arches progress across the floor of a Dumfriesshire quarry. A dead tree in the Australian outback is miraculously clothed in rust-red sand ... • Stone: Andy Goldsworthy offers an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary breadth of the artist's output and to understand more about this exceptionally talented sculptor whose work is accorded worldwide recognition.
"Wonderful stuff! – I suppose it's a rather odd concept, an artist who makes transient, temporary sculptures and photographs them, then we buy a book of the photos. Put like that it doesn't sound tempting. But in fact it works brilliantly.
• These landscape sculptures are not simply stone but earth, sand and related matter too. Most feature other materials like leaves, peat, ice or twigs, and in several cases the same impressive natural outcrops or boulders are treated in a variety of different ways. Some photos are taken with fast film and capture the spray of sand flying through the air; others with a long exposure so that moving water creates an impressionistic blur. The colours - all of them natural materials - are amazing.
• Who will want this book? Anyone interested in sculpture, of course. But is also inspirational for gardeners, landscape painters, photographers … children will love many of these pictures and have their imaginations stimulated. In fact, Goldsworthy's work appeals to the child in all of us, in the most positive and elemental way. I recommend this book very strongly to anyone who would like to be surprised by the beautiful. It would make a generous and wonderful gift for someone who otherwise might be difficult to buy for, too."
