An exceptional catalogue for a memorable exhibtion. This beautiful book of the 2014 celebration at the Sakıp Sabancı Museum of 600 years of Ottoman–Polish relations brings together a treasre trove of art from Polish collections as well as museums in Istanbul, including the Topkapı and the Sadberk Hanım Museum.
• he book is in paperback, with smallish but finely printed images of the texiltes, pottery, books, paintings and arms. It includes detailed footnotes. In our opinion, essential for anyone interested in Ottoman culture, but difficult to buy outside the museum. The cover image is a detail of Luigi Mayer’s famous watercolour of Count Piotr Potocki’s entry into Pera in 1790, now at the King Jan III Museum in Wilanów.

Sabanci University's Sakip Sabanci Museum is hosting an exhibition entitled "Distant Neighbor, Close Memories: 600 Years of Turkish-Polish Relations" in celebration of the 600th anniversary of relations between Turkey and Poland.
• "Commercial and cultural relations between Poland and Ottoman Turkey, which began in the 15th century and reached their zenith in the 17th and 18th centuries, made major contributions to the arts in both countries, in particular influencing the tastes, dress and way of life of the Polish elite. Since a relationship going back 600 years could not be represented by material from Poland alone, we were obliged to find a contemporary Ottoman equivalent for every object brought from that country," Sabanci Museum Director Dr. Nazan Ölcer recently said.
• The exhibition covers a period beginning in the first half of the 15th century and continuing with trade, peace and war up to the late 17th century, when the Second Siege of Vienna became a turning point not just in relations between Ottoman Turkey and Poland, but also in the history of Europe. Among the documents, paintings and other objects in the exhibition are an oil portrait of Hürrem Sultan, the favorite wife of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent, and the letter she wrote to King Sigismund Augustus; portraits of King Jan III Sobieski of Poland, remembered for his accomplishments in the first and second battles of Hotim (Chocim) and the Siege of Vienna, and members of his family; and a treatise on the Islamic faith written by the Polish born Wojciech Bobowski (Ali Ufki Bey, 1610-85), Ottoman government interpreter and musicologist.
