In the autumn of 1894, the 19-year-old American Benjamin Hunting Howell arrived at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, England, to study. He soon found himself out boating on the River Cam.
• Howell would be a successful oarsman in the late 1890s, both for Trinity Hall BC and later for the Tideway club Thames RC. For two consecutive years, he won the finest trophies for amateur scullers in the world, the Diamond Challenge Sculls at Henley Royal Regatta and the Wingfield Sculls on the River Thames in London.
• This story about Hunting Howell, the "forgotten champion", not only presents the young American, it also depicts many of his contemporary oarsmen: "Old Blues" from Oxford and Cambridge, amateur and professional scullers, and legendary rowing coaches and rowing writers.
