THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS was established in 1775 and has protected American interests in peace and war for over two hundred years, serving in locations from Libya to Mexico and most recently in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The American ”island-hopping” campaign in the Pacific was fundamental to the defeat of Japan in 1945. The battles at Tarawa in November 1943, the Marianas islands in June 1944, Peleliu in September 1944 and most notoriously Iwo Jima in February 1945, were characterised by savage fighting and heavy casualities. Japanese garrisons often fought to the death and kamikaze air attacks posed a grave threat to the supporting US forces.
By the end of the war, the Marine Corps had grown dramatically to include six divisions, five air wings, and supporting troops. From a peak strenght of 485 113 personnel, the Marines sustained nearly 87 000 casualties. A total of 82 Marines earned the Medal of Honor, the United States highest award for gallantry.
Employing a wide range of archive photographs, George Forty examines the US Marine Corps organisation and command structure, strategy, tactics and amphibious assault doctrine. He provides brief biographies of the Corps most important and influential figures, from senior commanders to Medal of Honor recipients, and surveys vehicles, aircraft and other equipment, insignia and uniforms to provide a complete portrait of the US Marine Corps at war.
