Born in 1960, Iraj Mesdaghi joined the Confederation of Iranian Students in 1977. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Mesdaghi became an opposition organiser resulting in having 10 harrowing years inside infamous Evin, Gohardasht and Ghezelhesar prisons. One of the few survivors of the 1988 Massacre of Political Prisoners, Mesdaghi has since devoted his life to documenting human rights atrocities in Iran including the principles and features of the Islamic justice system under which the 1988 Massacre took place.
In 2021, Mesdaghi and his friends sucessfully brought Hamid Nourito justice over his role in the 1988 Massacre. Nouri was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. For the first time, 1988 Massacre was recognised by a European Court and perpetrators identified in its judgment. Mesdaghi's memories and prison plans, replicated in this book, were key pieces of evidence referenced by Swedish Prosecutors in their successful prosecution of Nouri.
With justice first and foremost in mind, this book looks at the origins, conduct and aftermath of the 1988 Massacre. It identifies Criminals Against Humanity, dwells on the sensitive issue of victim identities and remains, reveals potential mass grave sites and Regime's attempts at destroying evidence.
