The Art of Chinese Landscape Painting: In the Caves of Tun-huang (Art of the World Series)
Inbunden bok. Greystone Press. 1968. 244 sidor.
Mycket gott skick. Along the Great Silk Road, the ancient transit for goods and ideas from East to West and back again, is the ancient Chinese city of DunHuang (as Tun-Huang). A meeting place of people – ethnic Chinese, Uighurs, Mongols, Hsia; the people from as far West as Rome and Western Europe – and ideas, above the city is its enormous Buddhist shrine, the Mogao Caves, a complex of almost 500 grottoes and caverns. It contains and highlights the development of Chinese landscape painting, especially from 581 – 1279 CE. This beautifully photographed and written volume contains the description of the frescoes and murals themselves; it also contains translation from the Mandarin of many comments and poetry about the frescoes; explanations of the significance of the art and the change and advance of the art over the centuries. Now a destination, school and heritage sight, this volume was one of the first to describe this magnificent display.
