Barber's narrative of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1955-58) that successfully completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica, via the South Pole. It was the first expedition to reach the South Pole on land, preceded only by Amundsen in 1911 and Scott in 1912. The expedition was led by the explorer Sir Vivian Fuchs with the help of Sir Edmund Hillary and a support team. The British journalist Noel Barber (1909-1988) was flown directly to the South Pole to witness Fuchs arriving on 20 January, 1958.
