Ur pärmtexten: When miss Annie Sprag, an eccentric old maid died in a little Italian village, she set the place wondering whether she had been the cause of a religious miracle, for upon her body were found the holy stigmata, but she had a peculiar past. Her father Cyrus Spragg, had invented an odd religion in the American Middle West and also gained a reputation as a lecherous old man. Her brother, Uriah Spragg, had continued the family tradition of religious mania, and the scars which looked like the stigmata had in fact been inflicted upon her by this demented fanatic. Once again, Louis Bromfield demonstrates his familiar mastery in piecing together a complicated chronicle of unusual behaviour, and his landscapes, whether Italian or Middle West, are the vivid backgrounds for strange and puzzling events.
