TABLETS OF MEMORY The Bendigo Cohns and their Descendants 1853 - 1989

TABLETS OF MEMORY The Bendigo Cohns and their Descendants 1853 - 1989

Inbunden bok.

Mycket gott skick. ANTELOPE PRESS. 1990. 270 s. Språk: Engelska. Dedikation på tre rader på försättsbladet. The discovery of gold in Victoria in 1851 attracted thousands of migrants from all over the world seeking their fortunes. Three Cohn brothers from Horsens, Denmark, landed in Melbourne from S.S. Antelope in 1853. They quickly settled on the Bendigo goldfield. Within a year, in a partnership, they erected and began to conduct the C riteríon Hotel. It was the leading hotel of its day in Bendigo and is depicted in the painting reproduced on the cover. The brothers soon began a brewing and softdrink business; a fourth brother, who arrived in 1858, was associated with them for a time. In 1885 the brewery was the first in Australia to produce lager beer. The business was turned into a public company in 1887. Its products were household names in central and northem Victoria for more than a century. Each of the four brothers established an Australian family during the period from the l850s to the l870s. Their descendants, through six generations, have followed a great variety of occupations, in many parts of Australia and overseas. Tablets of Memory tells of the European roots of the family, the coming of the brothers to Australia, the businesses they established and the achievements of these mi grants, their descendants and their spouses. A large part of the book consists of biographical text about members of the family from all generations. The book has been compiled by three of the few descendants still bearing the Cohn sumame, and includes material contributed by cousins from all over the world, as well as the results of searches among official records. There is a complete family tree showing particulars of the direct descendants of the four brothers and of their wives or husbands, a total of nearly 700 persons; 120 photographs and an index are included. Tablets of Memory is a valuable work of reference for libraries, genealogical societies and educational institutions, and for persons studying the history of migrant families. lt will be of particular interest to those who have known members of the family or were associated with Cohn Bros. Ltd.
