The cat is a much loved and well known animal. In Western countries it is becoming the most popular pet, while its practical value as a rodent catcher has been appreciated for years. The behavior of the cat now has been studied in a variety of surroundings and circumstances, and the fruits of this research are brought together for the first time in this important new book. What can be substantiated about cat behavior is covered here, while speculations are identified as such. This carefully compiled book will serve as the definitive reference work on domestic cat behavior for years to come.
Commentary by Konrad Lorentz
This book is really a complete treatise on the subject. It not only describes the life of the house cat, but also of its wild relatives and ancestors. The choice of contributing authors is excellent and is a guarantee for the quality of the book. The ethology of the house cat is illuminated from many points of view and the fruitfulness of this approach cannot be better illustrated than by the confrontation of Paul Leyhausen´s cat ethology with Rudyard Kipling´s fairy tale on cats. This book reppesents a successful attempt to do justice to the complexity of behaviour of such a highly developed species. Konrad Lorentz
