The Gynecology section includes a timely chapter on sexual assault (as did the second edition), as well as a chapter dealing with pelvic organ prolapse and other entities identified with the neosubspecialty of urogynecology. The chapter "Abortion" is confusing in that it is not limited to that topic; it also discusses miscarriage and recurrent abortion, which may have been more logically included in the Reproductive Endocrinology section, as well as termination of pregnancy. The topic of terminating pregnancy includes discussion of the infamous RU-486, as well as the newer uses of methotrexate. It may, however, have been better placed at the end of the chapter on contraception and sterilization. The smaller sections on Reproductive Endocrinology and Gynecologic Oncology are at the same appropriate level for the medical student, and are comprehensive enough in scope to be usable as an overview of complicated topics for any medical reader outside the obstetrics and gynecology field. Following academic, if not general, tradition, the chapter on endometriosis could have been included within the Reproductive Endocrinology section rather than the general Gynecology section. However, the use of the GnRH analogues and other current medical therapies is covered. The chapter on cervical dysplasia appropriately includes a comparison of the Papanicolaou, the conventional, and the Bethesda classifications of cervical cytology, ensuring that the medical student stays as perplexed about the subject as the board-certified gynecologist.
