Notes of a film director

Notes of a film director

Häftad bok.

Gott skick. Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948), one of film history´s greatest directors. This book is a collection of 20 essays, articles and letters written between the early 1930´s and 1948. The first part, largely autobiographical, contains important insights into such areas as Eisenstein´s early experiments with the theater and his realization that film was the ideal expression for his ideas. Part Two is primarily concerned with the aesthetics of the film, and contains probably the most lucid explanation in print of the technique and use of montage. Eisenstein also explores the effect of various shots in Potemkin and their meaning to the film as a whole. Part Three contains vivid descriptions of Eisenstein´s thinking on the men whom he worked with and admired. Besides Gorky, and his cameraman Eduard Tisse, Eisenstein devotes considerable energy to the composer Sergei Prokofiev, and his description of Prokofiev´s creative process at work is considered one of the finest ever written. Charlie Chaplin, too, receives extensive consideration, both as a man and filmmaker. The book is rounded out by 78 illustrations, including 28 pages of the author´s drawings and sketches, and some previously unpublished stills given to the Museum of Modern Art by Eisenstein himself. Corrected republication of the first English translation by X Danko. New prefatory note by Richard Griffith.
