- Art is always changing, and institutions should be able to adapt to the conditions of artistic production. We believe that the small or midsize art centre plays an important role in its capacity to adapt and transform according to what artists are doing, while also providing stability and continuity. Thus, these institutions play a central part in what has been termed the 'ecology' of contemporary art. Since this crucial stability and continuity is challenged by current political decisions, this re- port is a timely tool for re ecting on the possible agency of art and its institutions.
