Strategies for Reading and Writing is design for the composition course focusing on. reading and writing in the Liberal Arts. The origin of the word "liberal" is the Latin term, liberalis, meaning "free,"and a liberal education was one that was "suitable for free men." The word reveals that education among the ancient Greeks and Romans was not universal; it was reserved for the sons of citizens, not for slaves or for woman.
Today the notin suggested by "liberal arts" may more meaningfully be though of as "freeing arts." That is, education in the traditional subjects constituting a liberal arts curriculum literature, history, music, mathematics, basic science and the visual arts - equips students to become conformed merely to conventional or parochial viewpoints, able to critically evaluate the attitudes and though on their contemporaries.
To learn to think critically, to understand mathematical principles, to read widely and well, to understand, and appreciate the dynamic of history and learn the structure of the fine arts is to make yourself to an independent learner. You will certainly not learn the whole matter of any subject area in undergraduate liberal arts education, but you will learn new patterns of thinking, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating.
