In a divided Vienna after the end of World War II, American novelist
Holly Martins arrives expecting to meet his old schoolfriend Harry Lime.
But Martins learns that Harry has been killed in a road accident. Major Calloway, a British officer, tells him Harry was a racketeer, but Martins refuses to believe him. As Martins investigates the account of Harry's death he hooks up with Harry's girlfriend Anna, a Czech refugee, and unravels the mystery of who was the third man' who carried Harry's corpse off the road.
