"The ferocious 'Harrods battle' has spilled over from the front pages of Fleet Street into the Law Courts, into boardrooms in the City, even into Downing Street. One one side is Roland ('Tiny') Rowland, multi-millionaire chief executive of the Lonrho conglomerate, on the other side, the three Al-Fayed brothers who, in 1985, snatched the Knightsbridge store from Rowland's grasp. This biography of Tiny Rowland illuminates the reasons Harrods, a British showpiece, remains an obsession with him. Born Roland Fuhrhop, in a centre for enemy aliens in India during the 1914-18 war, he as brought back to Europe to spend his childhood in Hamburg, his father's native city. After Hitler's rise to power, he came to Britain where, despite changing his name, he was to be dogged by his German background. War service as an RAMC private ended abruptly when he was detained in the Isle of Man. Then followed his emigration to Rhodesia where, in 1961, he became director of the then moribund Lonrho. 'My Life with Tiny' contains a great deal of material never previously released about this most enigmatic of men. It follows his rumbustious career, which has converted Lonrho into a worldwide corporation with an annual turnover of £2.6 billion. It examines Rowland's long friendship with Angus Ogilvy, the husband of Princess Alexandra, the Queen's cousin - and its disastrous conclusion. And it relates in detail the fight for Harrods and the way in which Rowland uses the Observer as his mouthpiece in the vendetta against the Egyptian brothers who thwarted him".
