POET : publications on English themes (Vol. 16) : The Battle of Maldon : the meaning, dating, & historicity of an old english poem

POET : publications on English themes (Vol. 16) : The Battle of Maldon : the meaning, dating, & historicity of an old english poem

Häftad bok. Department of English, University of Copenhagen. 1991. 167 sidor.

Gott skick. Språk: Engelska. (ISSN: 0902-4581). This study sees the poem as heroic panegyric in the service of political propaganda, the central theme being loyalty. It places the poem in relation to other descriptions of the Germanic heroic code, discusses the meaning of a number of cruces in it, and argues in favour of assuming composition between A.D. 991 and A.D. 1016. Some of the details related by the poet, and not recorded elsewhere, are regarded as historical; other details - notably such as make up the subject-matter of the speeches - are regarded as the poet's invention. In addition, the study reviews Maldon-criticism from Abegg (1894) to Scragg (ed., 1991). Hans Erik Andersen is senior lecturer in the Department of English, Copenhagen University.
