"Essential Reading for Lawrencians. – A 1996 book about T.E. Lawrence ("of Arabia") that examines a dozen specific Lawrence questions in greater depth than they have ever been examined before. The questions are factual and historical ones, not literary.
• The "scattered tracks" of the title allude to various things: first, to the many different topics covered in this diverse collection of essays; then also to the extensive desert field research undertaken by the author in the Middle East; and finally, to all the conflicting pieces of evidence, and conflicting opinions, the author encountered during his research - naturally enough, since so many of Lawrence's claimed feats either had no witnesses or had little or no documentation.

6. An analysis of the physique and personality of the Bey of Deraa, Lawrence's reputed tormentor in November 1917.
7. A list of over 50 errors in one chapter of a popular, but sloppy and cynical, 1990 Lawrence biography, The Golden Warrior.
8. An analysis of a wartime photograph of Lawrence possibly showing evidence of his torture at Deraa.
9. Some hitherto unpublished German documentary sources on Lawrence dating from the First World War.
10. Evidence that Lawrence's famed desert rescue of the straggler Gasim may have failed.
11. An extensive list of evidence against the reality of Lawrence's alleged Deraa capture and/or torture.
