Cain wrote hardboiled stories like no other, like "The Postman always ring twice", "Double Indemnity" and "Mildred Pierce". "The Root of his evil" is the only of his novels who has a female protagonist. This book, as many of his others has been filmed. Three times as "When tomorrow comes" with Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne in 1939 and as "Interlude" in 1957 by Douglas Sirk and later in 1968.
