Not so much poetry aimed at children, as accessible poems by a great range of authors, from Ben Jonson to Ezra Pound, via Ogden Nash, DH Lawrence and Martial, with regular contributions from Anon. The compiler seems to have a fondness for rhyme, rhythm and dialect verses. Not to mention heroes: Horatius, Drake, Bonny Dundee, Growltiger. Yes, no poet today would write "The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,/ And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;" (Byron) But poems do not have to be modern to strike a chord. These works are often highly memorable. And fun. "There was a naughty Boy/A naughty Boy was he/He would not stop at home/He could not quiet be- ..." (Keats) If you encountered them as a child they stay with you and yield new meanings in later years. Having so many classic poems also makes this an excellent book for quotation checking! Amazon
