CLOSET TO MIDNIGHT on October 18th 1942, four men parachuted into the Songa Valley on Norway's Hardanger Plateau. They were the advance party of the British-led operation to sabotage the heavy water plant at Vemork near Rjukan - of vital importance to the German war effort in its attempt to manufacture an atom bomb. We are here witness to the dramatic and gripping account of the British tragedy, survival on the plateau, cold, hunger, inaction and the camaraderie that welded the five men together. The author, one of the main protagonists of the Vemork raid, includes in his account interesting glimpses from Compani Linge's training sessions in the UK. The book's second half - entitled OPERATION SUNSHINE' - recounts an episode of Norwegian war history few people know much about - the effort to safe-guard power stations and manufacturing plants from German reprisals during the last phases of the war.
