Häftad bok med mjuka pärmar. John A. Stotesburys doktorsavhandling, Umeå studies in humanities no 128. Ur baksidestexten: This is the first full-length study of the writing of the South African Joy Packer (1905-1977), whose work included six volumes of memoir and ten novels. Packer's writing, which was primarily popular in mode, is significant for its treatment of her extensive personal experience of British imperial power in peace and war, and for her attempt to merge the conventions of popular romantic fiction with the polemics of South African liberalism under apartheid. In addition to presenting analyses of Packer's main works, this study discusses the ways in which a white South African woman writer endeavoured to come to terms with apartheid from its earliest year to the mid 1970s. John A Stotesbury is a Senior Lecturer in English at the Univeristy of Joensuu, Finland.
