ArcPeriplus presents an album of 146 colour photographs by Lena Herzog with an essay by film director Werner Herzog. Pilgrims covers two events of great significance in the Buddhist calendar. The Kalachakra ceremony was scheduled to take place in Bodhgaya, India, in January 2002. Although the ritual was cancelled, half a million pilgrims from all over the world descended on this village to pray and catch a glimpse of the Dalai Lama.
Several months later, the Sakya Dawa festival, which marks the anniversary of Buddhas birth and death, took place near Mount Kailash in western Tibet. Since 2002 was the year of the horse, occurring every 12 years, the pilgrimage around Mount Kailash (the Kora) was said to reward the faithful with 12 times the deliverance of sins. Tens of thousands undertook the three-day trek - young, old, sick and healthy - walking by day amidst rock, sand and snow, and sleeping by night in the open.
