This book is a report of 12 years of research and deals with the life and work of the Swedish artist and experimental film-maker Viking Eggeling. He was active in Paris, Zurich and Berlin, and he was one of the pioneers in the field of abstract, animated film. Also he was the only Dadaist of Swedish origin. This is the first biography to be written of Viking Eggeling. The material presented has been gathered from public and private archives in Europe and in the USA.

As a work on art history, the book will be of great value to all interested in the Dada movement in Zurich, Berlin, Munich and Paris from 1916 until around 1922. It will also be valuable to anyone interested in the abstract art whose exponents are Kandinsky and Malevich. Besides introducing a large body of new material, the author corrects some erroneous opinions concerning Eggeling’s relation to the Dada movement and revises the data of several events and particular aspects within the history of early abstract, animated film.

The book itself is a graphic masterpiece and the illustrations are exquisite.

By Louise O’Konor. Art- and film-historian. Attached to the University of Stockholm 1964-1996 doing research work and lecturing on the History of Art and the History of Film.
