Two Beethoven Sketchbooks

Two Beethoven Sketchbooks

Inbunden bok. Victor Gollancz Ltd. 1979. 130 sidor.

Nära nyskick. Skyddsomslag i mycket gott skick. Omslaget är i mycket gott skick utan skador men med blekta partier. When Beethoven died in 1827 the sketchbooks which he had used and retained throughout his working life were sold, with other papers and effects, at an auction. Many were broken up and dispersed, but a few survived intact, and these give the student opportunity to see into the composer's mind and method of working. The author, a pianist and composer who had been a schoolboy when Beethoven died, and who lived until 1882, spent much of his life studying all he could find of Beethoven's relics, and among many essays and commentaries, produced a thematic catalogue of Beethoven's works. But he is perhaps best known to posterity for his commentaries on the few sketchbooks that survived intact and to which he had access; and of these, the two that make up the present volume are perhaps the best known.
