Owen Jones (1806-1889) was an architect and designer, and taught Applied Arts at the South Kensington School of Design. A man with a great love of Hispanic and Moorish art, as well as far Eastern and medieval forms, he travelled through the Middle East in 1833 and explored Spain in 1834. A contemporary of the Pre-Raphaelites, and a great inspiration to the Arts and Crafts Movement (whose most famous founder and associate was William Morris), he is chiefly remembered for hsi contribution to the Great Exhivition at Crystal Palace in 1851, of which he was Superintendent of Works, and for his ngreat masterwork ”The Grammar of Ornament”, first published in 1856. That scholarly, yet thoroughly practical asnd richly illustrated craftsman´s handbook of his experience and principles was to be of immense influence upon the artistic thinking of his day, and was one of the trbutaries which led in time to the movement known as ”Art Nouveau”. When it first reached America in 1880, The Grammar of Ornament greatly influenced Frank Lloyd Wright, whose own ideas were to have so much impåact upon early twentieth century Western architecture.
But at the age of 79, his life and work almost completed, Owen Jones felt that he had to leave just one final tribute to an era he flourished in and a country he obviously loved, by paying jomeage to a monarch who represented all the splendour of a kingdom and empire the at its zenith. THE PASLMS OF DAVID is an elaborately illuminated setting of the poetic devotions which are not only sacred to both the Jewish and Christian faiths, but revered by those of all persuasions for their evocative literary beauty. Arranged and numbered to be read over a period of thirty days, the 150 psalms arfe set out in one hundred large illuminated pages of red, blue, black and gold, and the intricate decoration and finely interwoven ornament of the borders reflect Jones craftmanship and a lifetime of study.
Original copies of this work are now few and highly valued, and this careful reprint has been made direct from one of those rare volumes, called by Jonas his ”Victoria Psalter”. The opening pages read ”To Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria this Illuminated Psalter is with Permission Dedicated.” It was his farewell gift, and he died four years later.
