Modern Theatre, Seven Plays and an Essay

The Swedish author PAR LAGERKVIST, who received the Nobel Prize in literature in 1951, is best known in America and Eng land for his novels and short stories; it is not generally realized that he is also one of the most important Scandinavian dramatists since Strindberg and Ibsen and that his dramatic works alone constitute a significant life's accomplishment. Moreover, his connection with the theatre has not been limited to writing plays; he has been influential as a theorist and drama critic since the publication, in 1918, of his essay Modern Theatre: Points of View and Attack, which embodied the earliest recognition of Strindberg's importance as a renewer of modern drama.
This essay, incorporating subsequent revisions by Lagerkvist, has been translated by Thomas R. Buckman and is presented here along with seven Lagerkvist plays never previously available in English: The Difficult Hour (I, II, and III), The Secret of Heaven, The King, The Hangman, and The Philosopher's Stone. The volume includes an introduction by Mr. Buckman, a bibliography of Lagerkvist's plays, and performancé photographs of several produc-tions.
