Graham’s Lady’s and Gentleman’s Magazine (The Casket and Gentleman’s United). Volume XVIII. (Philadelphia: George R. Graham, 1841). With the first printing of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Also includes the first appearances of Poe’s tales “A Descent into the Maelström” and “The Island of the Fay.” Six issues of the periodical, January–June 1841. Illustrated with 12 plates (including six hand-coloured fashion plates), together with an initial hand-coloured frontispiece and a terminal “pattern” plate.
“The Murders in the Rue Morgue” is widely regarded as the first modern detective story. As the prototype detective, Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin exhibits traits that became conventions for later figures—most notably Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot—including the brilliant sleuth, the close friend who narrates, and a final revelation that precedes the step-by-step reasoning.

Half vellum (half-parchment) in a slipcase: sound and solid, with minor rubbing to the extremities. Contents generally clean, with some light spotting and a few small marginal tears, neatly repaired. Plates with some spotting. Tissue guards foxed.
