Illuminating, the art of decorating the written page with colour and gold, is necessarily practised in conjunction with fine lettering, and often, but not necessarily, joined also with heraldry. On the other hand, of course, fine lettering and heraldry may be practised on their own. A complete guide to all three subjects would obviously have to be a large work of reference, and the information codensed into this small book only covers the major problems, without much detail (...).
Though it is hoped that the book will prove valuable to the beginner or young student, its purpose is also to stimulate general interest in illuminating, and to be of practical service to all who wish to embark on it at any stage."
