Parallel text in Swedish and French. The Island of Saint Barthélemy was a Swedish colony from 1785 to 1878. During the Napoleonic wars the island became more heavily militarized and hostilities broke out between residents sympathetic with the French and those who stood on British side. The charter of 1811 prescribed new regulations regarding the government of the island, not least in military matters. It also founded a rudimentary form of parliament, to convene every three years.
