This is a survey of a seminal and intensely controversial period in British history, from the Union of the Crowns of England and Scotland in 1603 to the union of kingdom in 1707. It explores the intersecting histories of the Stuart monarchies and considers how events in each nation were shaped by being part of a multiple kingdom as well as by their own internal dynamics.
Throughout, special attention is given to personalities and political style of successive rulers. Their role i precipitating two revolution is examined against the background of longer-term constitutional, religious and social themes . In particular, the parallels0 between James I and Charles III, and between Charles II and between Charles I and James II are clearly drawn out.
A history of the modern British Isles 1603-1707 consciously avoids being either a pure narrative or an historiographical discussion. Instead , it presents an analytical and interpretative account of thy 1700-century in Britain and Ireland. Its main - but not exclusive - focus is political and constitutional history, but social, economic and culture themes are also woven into the text.
The book transcends the artificial divide of 1660 and highlights the patterns and continuities which unite the 1700-century as a whole. The first and large chapters offer "snapshots" of Britain and Ireland in 1603 and 1707, respectively. The volume concludes by assessing how these 104 years changed the face of Britain and their legacy for subsequent developments.
