Its theory is based on the Yin and Yang philosophy, which is derived from I Ching, or the Book of Changes. Tai Chi Chuan forms are mostly practiced in circular movements. In practicing tLo forms, firstly, you should calm down and concentrate your mind; secondly, the distribution of your strength should follow the Yin and Yang principle, so that you can achieve physical and mental balance. The author of this book has been teaching I Ching and Tao Te Ching in the California Institute of Asian Studies, San Francisco, since 1968. He has also taught Tai Chi Chuan to hundreds of students across the country. Meanwhile , he has been teaching Tai Chi Classes in the CaUfornia School of Professional Psychology, San Francisco. With these experiences, the author has used the most reliable way to deal with the Philosophy and the theory of Tai Chi Chuan,and given detailed explanations of the principle with summarized key points. After you read the chapters of the theory and history of Tai Chi Chuan, you will have much more knowledge and understanding of this kind of martial art. With this understanding you can do much better in practicing the forms.Regarding the practice of Tai Chi forms, all School are based on the same theory, and philosophy. In the United States, as well as in China, Yang Shool's forms are still more prevalent, while Wu School comes next. The pictures of forms printed in this book, are of two styles from Yang School, and one style from Wu School. The captions used for the two Yang styles are Yang School A and Yang School B, respectively. Many forms of these three styles, bear the same name, but are practiced in somewhat different ways.
