Om den danske kunstmaler Gerda Wegener (1885–1940), der brød med de traditionelle kønsrelationer mellem maler, muse og model, og som i sine malerier skildrede kvinders skønhed med lige dele indlevelse, forståelse og fascination.

"Gerda Wegener’s favorite motif was women. Erotic, self-assured, modern and graceful women who were not afraid to be just that.
• She celebrated female beauty, coquettishness and flirtation, nudity and roleplay. Her transgender husband, Einar Wegener, whose female alter ego Lili Elbe became the first person in the world to undergo gender reassignment surgery, was her muse and, as Lili, was her favorite motif.
• Lili became her life partner, and the focus of her paintings, in which she, Lili, appears as a friendly, erotic woman and the uninhibited part of the duo Gerda & Lili in the decadent carnivals of Paris.
• For the Wegeners, whilst women may perhaps flirt with a man, they are just as likely to attract female admirers. The women Wegener paints are like herself - modern city girls who can smoke their own cigarettes, drive their own cars and lust after who they want. The liberated garcon and the graceful ballet dancer are similarly good motifs - the only women she wasn’t interested in were peasants.
• Wegener’s style was typical Parisian art-deco, and she provided illustrations to many newspapers, magazines and advertising campaigns of the time. She also produced some decidedly erotic art, which she signed with a party mask. In Copenhagen, she divided opinion, but in Paris she felt at home. She and Einar lived there for years and exhibited together in some of the most trend-setting locations, both in Denmark and Paris.
• The Arken exhibition also includes examples of Einar Wegener’s landscape paintings. When Einar was Lili, he didn’t paint - that was Einar’s domain.
• The exhibition provides a unique insight not only into Gerda Wegener’s art, but also her free-spirited nature. She was an erotic human being whose artistic endeavors spoke of a lust for life in all its facets, and she lived out that lust without shame or embarrassment.
• In her art, Lili is not a necessary evil that that forced its way in or something that she wants to get rid of. Instead, she is a natural extension of Gerda’s life and art, a part of her portrayal of female beauty, emancipation and sexuality. And that’s what makes it so exceptional." – Lise Hannibal.

("The movie 'The Danish Girl' tells the story of Einar Wegener, who became known as the trans woman Lili Elbe and was one of the first people to undergo gender corrective surgery. The role of Gerda Wegener is played by Alicia Vikander who won an Oscar for her portrait of the Danish artist.")
